When people ask my name, I don't say 'my name is Khan': Salman

In a latest swipe at the 'King Khan', Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan has said the whole episode of Shahrukh's detention at the Newark Airport has been blown out of proportion and there was a promotional angle to it.

''I think all this has been blown out of proportion. Forget imigration in America or anywhere in the world. You cant enter any Marriott or Taj land or any five star, Grand Hyatt, till the time you and your car is not checked, dickki kholo, bonot kholo (open the dicky and bonnet). When you don't mind here entering a hotel, why do you have to mind it there,'' Salman told a TV channel.
Suspecting that there was a promotional angle to the whole episode, Salman, in a interview to CNN IBN last night, said, ''I am sure also Shahrukh must have got upset at the point of time, but all of us have done world tours. This must be blown out of proportion or there must be a promotional angle to it. When people ask my name I say Salman, Salman Khan. I don’t say ‘my name is Khan’. That's the name of his film.'' Ruling out any reconciliation between him and Shahrukh, the actor said, ''No, I mean he is doing fine, he doesn't miss me, he is not crying over me, ooh I want to go and make up with Salman. He is fine he's doing his stuff right, he is doing good. He is good to the people that he works for and it's a good thing. Its just that he's at one end of Bandstand and I am at the beginning of Bandstand.''

SIMPLY SALMAN: The Bollywood superstar talks to Rajeev Masand in an exclusive interview.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has been a part of the Indian film industry for more than 20 years. Controversy’s favourite child, the actor will soon be seen in his new film Wanted. In an interview with CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand, Salman gets candid about Katrina, marriage and ex-girlfriends.

Rajeev Masand: Salman it's been 20 years exactly since Maine Pyar Kiya. It's the film, which shot you to success and fame. What are your memories of making the film?

Salman Khan: I didn't want to go meet Suraj (Sujar Barjatya). I was literally forced ot go and meet him. I was thinking it's Rajshri, they will make wear a dhoti. They had made serious films so I said I didn't want to go meet him. Then I was told that I must go n meet him. So Honey uncle, who works with my dad, gave me money for taxi and then I went and met him. But when Suraj started narrating the script to me I thought it was super cool. And when he started talking about the Kabootar song Suraj got tears in his eyes. Looking at Suraj I got tears in my eyes. The way he looked at me, he knew that I felt the scene. As soon as the narration finished I said okay Suraj, I'm on. He said 'no, no I haven't signed you yet, I’m looking for more people'. So I on hearing this suggested four-five of my friends and said if not me one of my friends should get it.

Rajeev Masand: There is this story that filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar who was an actor at the time was almost signed for the film with Bhagyashree?

Salman Khan: No, no he's lying. But Rajiv Goswami and Deepak Tijori were considered. Suraj was flying to Ooty to sign Neelam Kothari for Bhagyashree's role. He then saw Bhagyashree in the office and signed her, I told him Bhagyashree looks like my sister. But he said she was perfect for the role and then when we saw her on screen, she was an absolute delight.

Rajeev Masand: In these 20 years, you have done films which went on to become big blockbusters and some that were complete washouts. Do you get upset when a film doesn't work or flops?

Salman Khan: When one does a film and everything goes on right in it, the director, producer, actors have all done their bits, but when you see it just doesn't work. Sometimes it turns out superb and sometimes it just doesn't work. My film Love is an example of that, I was really happy with that film but it didn't work. Even Andaz Apna Apna which is now a cult comedy film didn't work at the time. They were ahead of their time.

There are also times when an actor tells the director not to make a film in a certain way, but then the director tells you to trust him and you have to. And then when the film doesn't do well, I realise that I told the director the same thing. Now days what I've started doing is, I tell the directors that I've heard enough of 'trust me' and people ultimately say 'Salman's film didn't work' so I tell them to trust me now that I've been in the industry for 20 years.

Rajeev Masand: Your new film Wanted is an all out action film. It's been a long time since you have done an action film?

Salman Khan: Yes, it's been quite some time. Veergati and Karan Arjun were the last two action films.

Rajeev Masand: Did you enjoy returning to that?

Salman Khan: It's out and out action, it's physical action. Doing 90 days of action sequences starting from 10:00 am in the morning and then going to the gym after that. It gets very painful.

Rajeev Masand: Wanted is also directed by Prabhu Deva. Did he give you a lot of difficult dance steps?

Salman Khan: Yes, there were a lot of difficult dance steps, which obviously I couldn't do. Then I used to do the steps and they looked completely different to what he showed me. It was very funny; he choreographed some steps and told his assistant to make me rehearse. So from Prabhu Deva's style to the assistant's style there was a difference. And then from the assistant's style to my style was a huge difference. They put on the music and I showed Prabhu what I could do. He looked at me and said 'sir, but these are not the steps I choreographed.'

Then we recorded all the three styles and saw that all three, Prabhu's, the assistant’s styles and mine are completely different. And then Prabhu could not do what I did. It's very difficult to do what I did.

Rajeev Masand: Shah Rukh Khan was detained at a US airport recently. He said it was because his name 'Khan' was common. Other Muslim artists like Zayed Khan, Irrfan Khan and Kabir Khan said this has happened to them. Has this happened to you?

Salman Khan: I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. Forget immigration in America or anywhere in the world. You can't enter any five star hotels till the time you and your car are checked. So when you don't mind the security check while entering a hotel here, why do you have to mind it there? I'm Shah Rukh must be feeling the same. At that point of time a person's ego gets hurt. It must have been blown out of proportion and there must be a promotion angle also.

Rajeev Masand: You are known to be an emotional guy. You go all out for your friends and the poeple who you don't like have to face the wrath of Salman Khan?

Salman Khan: There is nothing like that. I just don't hang out with them anymore. That is it.

Rajeev Masand: Are friendships and enmities permanent in this business?

Salman Khan: When one is growing up it's different. But today you come to a stage where there are no friends. Most people who you meet are just acquaintances and who you get along with. Everyone should realise that your childhood friends and your family are all you need.

Rajeev Masand: Is there a reconciliation possible between you and Shah Rukh?

Salman Khan: No, I mean he's doing fine. He doesn't miss me, it's not like he is crying over me. He's doing good work and he is good to the people he works for. He is at one end of Bandstand and I'm at the beginning of Bandstand.

Rajeev Masand: Do you miss the friendship?

Salman Khan: No, not really. We weren't that close anyway. We used to hang out together once in a while. We did quite a few films and had a laugh. We had a problem earlier as well, and one night it just happened. People have fights; it's just the next morning it was taken to a different level. If everything were sorted out that night itself, perhaps, things would have been fine. But I guess there was a different agenda to that.

Rajeev Masand: You recently appeared on chat show with your mother. She rarely makes any public appearances.

Salman Khan: I'm going to charge money for my mom appearing on any show from now on.

Rajeev Masand: The theme of the show was mama's boy. Can you talk to your mother about anything? Does she know all your secrets? Even about the girlfriends?

Salman Khan: She knows everything, even before I know, she knows.

Rajeev Masand: Your father said something very interesting about you. He said Salman falls in love with film actresses, he then looks for his mother's qualities in them and that is the reason he isn't married.

Salman Khan: Yes, maybe. If I wasn't an actor and was an industrialist or politician I would have looked in those fields. But I'm an actor and these are the kind of people that I meet. They are all good girls, which I've met.

Rajeev Masand: You think you will eventually marry an actress?

Salman Khan: I have no idea.

Rajeev Masand: Are you fed up being asked that question?

Salman Khan: I don't even react to it anymore. I'm on auto-pilot when I'm asked this question.

Rajeev Masand: Did you ever come close to getting married?

Salman Khan: Yes there was, it was at 3:30 in the morning and it lasted till 4: 00 am. Then at 4:30 am I was fast asleep. (He jokes)

Rajeev Masand: Was there ever a girl you wanted to get married to but she wasn't ready?

Salman Khan: It's better that the girl should not be ready to get married than the guy. If the girl is ready to get married and you don't want to get married to the girl, it's not a good situation. So I always hope that the girl should not be ready to get married. It's lot less painful and the guilt is a lot lesser.

Rajeev Masand: Has that happened?

Salman Khan: I don't think anyone has ever said no. But these marriage questions don't come up like that. When you are dating someone, it's taken for granted that after a year or two this will ultimately culminate into a marriage. So that is just understood. But after say three or more years, suddenly the girl realises that this man is not for me. He is not the same person who I thought he was.

Rajeev Masand: Would you ever run away and get married?

Salman Khan: No, I would get married and then run away.

Rajeev Masand: Would you ever hide your marriage?

Salman Khan: I have not been good at hiding things ever. So I don't think marriage would stay a secret.

Rajeev Masand: Would you expect your wife to stop working if you got married?

Salman Khan: No I would not.

Rajeev Masand: Even if she was an actress?

Salman Khan: If you are going to be greedy and do this thing that I want this film and that film, then that doesn't work. You should be at a position that when you have children and then put on the TV they should be proud of you. They should think their mother looks beautiful on screen.

I'm not being a male chauvinist but it's difficult for women to wake up really early in the morning and then you get your make up done. Then come back in the evening and spend time with your husband and children and **** food. It gets very tiresome. So, I think you can do your work and manage both the sides in a relaxed manner.

Rajeev Masand: Are you a good boyfriend?

Salman Khan: I've heard not.

Rajeev Masand: Katrina says she watches all your films but you don’t watch any of her films?

Salman Khan: Yes I don't. Once I saw she was wearing a really small skirt and I didn't like it. But then you have to sometimes chill and let it go. And I don't have a choice, and it's better to stay away from those things. I mean I see the promos and get an idea of what is going to be in the film, so it's better to stay away from that.

Rajeev Masand: Do you advise her on her career?

Salman Khan: No, she's a grown up girl. Initially I did, but after that you have to let them go. She's good at making her own decision about choosing films and what to do. Earlier she used ask me check a couple of her scenes because of her dubbing but now I don't do that. I don't even go to any of her sets because there was this whole reputation that I land up on my girlfriend's sets. I've been labelled and aggressive boyfriend, so I now I stay away from all that stuff.

Rajeev Masand: What do you do when you bump into ex-girlfriends?

Salman Khan: I'm very cordial. In fact I'm friends with most of them and I've heard they have high regards for me. At least that is what I've heard. I'm in touch with most of them except one. I have been for their weddings except one. So, it's all good.
