When Louis Vuitton invited Verve to the 3rd Marrakech International Film Festival, we prepared for a week of excessive stargazing and snazzy parties. Kaftans and kebabs mixed with movies and magic as the charming city geared up for a week of cinematic splendour. The Moroccans’ love for Indian movies was apparent by the number of Hindi films being screened at the festival. In attendance were biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor (who was a jury member), Bobby Bedi and Tabu. But the belles of the ball were definitely Amisha Patel and Manisha Koirala, special invitees of Louis Vuitton. Verve followed them on their magic carpet ride as they were given a taste of true five-star treatment.
Paris: The Louis Vuitton store on Avenue Montaigne: The two Bollywood beauties were ready to be togged in designer duds from head to toe, for showing off at the festival. After many discarded options, Manisha chose an all-black ensemble with a pink stole and finished with matching pink ankle boots. She also took a white Suhali leather bag and a black Multicolore Alma. Amisha decided to forgo an outfit and went straight for the bags that are on every society queen’s wish list. With some smart negotiation and gentle persuasion, she convinced the folks in the store to let her get away with a plum Suhali leather bag, two Multicolore Almas, one in black and the other in white and a black Keepall.

Marrakech, Morocco: Family matters seemed to be top priority as the pampered duo both brought their mothers along, with Amisha also accompanied by her father and Manisha had jeweller, Paulomi Sanghvi for company as well. Flying into Marrakech on a private jet with Louis Vuitton president Yves Carcelle and international press from the likes of Vogue and Tatler, they touched down in style, heading straight for their hotel, Le Memounia. This was the hub of the festival, abuzz with press, fans and stars alike. You never knew whom you could bump into in the forever-crowded lobby. Verve spied Jeremy Irons looking like a lost tourist and the trés chic Sharmila Tagore, in leggings and a pair of Chanel glasses, on the way for a workout. However, we could boast of having the delicious Colin Farrell as a neighbouring resident at the Hotel Las Jardins de la Koutoubia, where we were staying!
What with posing for pictures with adoring Moroccan fans to fine dining at the king’s palace, our two stars had their schedules pretty full. But they did manage to get away for an afternoon shopping spree, to look for kaftans in the Medina souk, (market). They were led by Tikka Singh, the Indian representative for Louis Vuitton. Amisha didn’t find much to her liking but the Nepalese beauty came away with two Moroccan carpets from an especially effervescent Bollywood fan, Aziz, who later loved telling us, over and over, how she had been to his shop. He even gave us a business card to pass on to Aamir Khan, for the next time he visits!

Lunches, dinners, happening parties, movies -- the excitement was building towards the big event -- the Bollywood night hosted by Louis Vuitton. Our anticipation was heightened as we walked through a maze of corridors leading to the actual location and we could not help but hope, that at the end, lay a party that was worth all the hype. On entering, the sheer size of the location left us in awe, which actually ended up being a minus point, since it never really looked like there was a full house. Also, since the showing of Maqbool, which was scheduled before the party, ran late, the high profile guests only trickled in post midnight. That aside, the exotic women, suave men and Moroccan air made for an intoxicating night. The bubbly (Moet and Chandon, what else?!) flowed endlessly, designer bags and air kisses were everywhere. A kathak dancer, who had the crowd enthralled with every twirl of his hand, entertained the eclectic guest list, which included French author and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, with his actress wife Arielle Dombasle, shoe designer Christian Louboutain, French actress Virginie Ledoyen, Egyptian actress Yousra, Yves and Rebecca Carcelle, Tikka Singh, Bobby Bedi and his wife Varsha, Amisha Patel, Manisha Koirala, Tabu, Irfaan Khan, Rajpal Yadav, young gun directors Shaad Ali, Apurva Lakhia and Chandan Arora, Uma and Lia Dubash, Amit and Asha Patel, Paulomi Sanghvi and columnist Nikhil Khanna.
Unfortunately, some of the heavyweights were missing in action. Shashi Kapoor, Shekhar Kapur, Sharmila Tagore, her two daughters and the Bachchans stayed away. We’re guessing the Bachchans were too tired from the previous night’s extravagant soirée, at Joad Qadiri’s -- entrepreneur Preeti Paul’s fiancé -- beautiful Moroccan home. We had weaved our way through exquisite doorways and agile bellydancers, catching Arvind and Tanya Dubash in animated conversation with Priya Paul and Abhishek Bachchan letting his hair down on the dance floor, doing a mean bhangra to ‘Mundian to bach ke’. Seated close by, an elegant Jaya beamed as daughter Shweta too, took to the floor and showed her brother some moves.

Back at the Bollywood bash, Amisha arrived, unwell but glowing none the less in a pink Neeta Lulla creation. (Quite a brave choice of designer after Ash’s Cannes fiasco). Her mother, Asha Patel, was not to be left behind and definitely gave her daughter a run for her money in the glamour department! We spotted the proud mama tucked away in a corner showing off pictures of Amisha and star-in-the-making son, Ashmit, to a group of gushing guests. Manisha arrived in her newly acquired outfit, complete with her own, much-coveted Cherry Blossom bag. Later in the evening we caught her cutting a rug with Yves Carcelle while Tikka Singh and Paulomi Sanghvi finally let the music get the better of them. The party lasted till the wee hours and we looked forward to eating a late brunch with a side order of gossip on toast!

Back to Paris: Amisha, sans parents, left the very next morning, having to reach Mumbai in time for a shoot. The diva treatment wasn’t over yet -- she flew to Paris on the private jet again and was graciously put up in a hotel by the Carcelles, since she missed her connection home. The day the rest of the gang was leaving, we noticed a fresh looking Manisha in off-white pants and a jacket and Mrs Patel holding on to one of her daughter’s new monogram bags. In Paris, the Vuitton invitees were given a preview of Paul Gauguin’s evocative Tahiti pictures, etchings and monotones at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais. The event was hosted in the presence of Savitri Kunadi, the Indian ambassador in Paris and some of the French brand’s top brass including president, Yves Carcelle, managing director Serge Brunschwig, marketing director Thierry de Longevialle and corporate press attaché Nathalie Tollu.
After five hectic days, we made our way to the Charles de Gaulle airport, and got ready for the real world again. No more lunching with movie stars and sleeping in till noon! We saw an unrecognisable Tabu, without a trace of make-up, wearing jeans, a white top and short denim jacket wheeling her trolley into the Air France Business Class line. She caused quite a stir when the Indian co-passengers realised who she was. But the Maqbool star kept a low profile, unlike Asha Patel, who was amicably chatting away to the crew, filling them in on her talented progeny. She was also heard promising to call everyone for the premiere of Ashmit’s first film Inteha and asking people to try a meal at their family-owned restaurant in Bandra, The Fireplace. Now that’s what we call marketing par excellence!
